Welcome to the Maryland Institute for Innovative Computing (MIIC)

The Maryland Institute for Innovative Computing (MIIC) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) was established on July 29, 2021, through a partnership between UMBC and the State of Maryland. This collaboration brings together expertise in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data science to address some of the state’s most pressing challenges in technology, analytics, and workforce development.
MIIC serves as a bridge between the university and state and local agencies, combining UMBC’s research, innovation, and talent with the real-world needs of Maryland’s public sector. Our faculty, staff, and students work side-by-side with government partners to strengthen cybersecurity readiness, recover from cyberattacks, and guide data-driven decision making that is secure, ethical, and effective.
Through these efforts, MIIC also plays a key role in building Maryland’s technology workforce pipeline. By connecting higher education institutions across the University System of Maryland with opportunities in both the public and private sectors, MIIC helps prepare the next generation of professionals to lead in an increasingly data-driven world.
MIIC is soon to be housed under the UMBC Cybersecurity Institute (UCI) — aligning its mission with UCI’s leadership in advancing research, education, and partnerships across cybersecurity, data science, and emerging technologies. This integration will further strengthen MIIC’s ability to deliver impactful, interdisciplinary solutions that support Maryland’s innovation and resilience.
