History, Mission, and Vision

History

The Maryland Institute for Innovative Computing (MIIC) was established on July 29, 2021, through a memo of understanding (MOU) between UMBC and Maryland State Government. The MOU identified the following as areas of collaboration:

The MIIC will address pressing challenges related to computing, analytics, and workforce in state agencies, with a focus on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data science. UMBC faculty, students and staff will work with MIIC partners to provide expertise on the complex process of recovering from cyberattacks. They will also offer technical guidance to inform policy decisions for leveraging data safely, securely, and ethically.

The partnership will also include programs for building a talent pipeline from higher education institutions within the University System of Maryland and across the state to partners in the public and private sectors.

Mission

The mission of MIIC is to connect the talent and technical skills of the university with the needs of state and local government as they pertain to cybersecurity, data analytics, and workforce. We do this by working closely with state agencies and local jurisdictions to identify areas where MIIC can contribute to long-term solutions.  MIIC will continue to evolve as technology and the needs of our partner’s change.

Vision

The vision of MIIC is to provide both technology expertise and talent in the areas of data science, data analytics, and cybersecurity. We do this by being a trusted resource that can cost effectively and securely advance and support State agencies and local jurisdictions’ use of technology. To do this we work closely with agencies to help them best utilize their data assets, leverage university expertise in cybersecurity and data science, and build a workforce pipeline between universities and the agencies.
